Antioxidants are a group of compounds that slow down the oxidation processes in the body and have the ability to neutralize free radicals formed as a result of this chemical reaction. Reactive oxygen species (free radicals) damage proteins, DNA, unsaturated fatty acids, cell membranes, polysaccharides, and lipids present in the blood. Weakening or breaking down the antioxidant barrier in cells accelerates the aging process. When a free radical molecule comes into contact with an antioxidant molecule, it receives the missing electron from it and is neutralized. It is therefore very important to ensure a regular supply of antioxidants in the daily diet of animals in order to limit the adverse effects of reactive oxygen species on their bodies.
