Supportive formula, recommended for dogs and cats with symptoms of chronic renal failure. RenalVet is the world's only phosphorus chelator containing active vitamin D. Administered with a meal, it helps reduce phosphorus absorption in animals with chronic renal failure, which may have the effect of slowing the worsening of the disease. Phosphorus chelators are recommended by the International Society of Nephrology (IRIS) for animals starting in the early stages of organ failure.

Additional information

Calcium carbonate is one of the most commonly used calcium phosphate binders. In patients with chronic renal failure, phosphorus is one of the main contributors to worsening chronic renal failure. Therefore, one of the goals of therapy for this disease is to reduce dietary phosphorus supply through the administration of low-phosphorus foods or phosphorus-binding substances in the gastrointestinal lumen. Calcium carbonate is broken down in the gastrointestinal tract and the calcium ion released from it binds to the phosphate in the food to form insoluble and non-absorbable calcium phosphate. This reduces the amount of phosphorus absorbed from the food. Studies in humans and dogs indicate that a reduction in dietary phosphorus is one of the factors contributing to increased survival of patients with chronic kidney disease.

Chitosan is a partially deacylated polymer of acyl-glucosamine formed by the deacetylation of chitin. When used in combination with calcium carbonate as a calcium-binding aid in the gastrointestinal tract, it causes a decrease in serum phosphorus concentration, a decrease in parathormone levels and a decrease in urinary phosphorus excretion. The use of such a mixture can be considered as an alternative to veterinary diets for dogs and cats with renal failure.

The vitamin D contained in the formula is primarily to be considered as a supplement to potential deficiencies of this substance caused by renal failure. This is because the kidneys are responsible for converting the inactive form of vitamin D into the active form dihydroxycholecalciferol. In the case of renal failure, the ability to synthesise the active form of vitamin D is also impaired, so its supplementation may be clinically justified.
